Sustainability Solutions Festival: It’s Time To Find A Better Way

What is sustainability? “It means different things to different people. But it affects us all – how we treat one another, our planet and our future. Sustainability is the greatest opportunity we have today to ensure we have our best possible future.”

We are so honored to be a part of the first-ever ASU Sustainability Solutions Festival held February 17-22, 2014. This fun, full-day event focused on educating, entertaining and inspiring kids and parents about sustainability was held at Arizona Science Center. How can we all reduce, reuse, recycle and innovate for a better tomorrow?

We created a custom eco-friendly binocular sticker for the event and had hundreds and hundreds of recycled toilet paper rolls on hand to upcycle and re-purpose into interactive, simple toys with hundreds of kids. I brought along my enthusiastic little helper so it made the day even more special.

A big thank you goes to ASU Sustainaibilty Solutions Festival for putting on this very impressive week-long festival and also to Arizona Science Center for hosting the event that launched this celebration!

Ghoulish Girly-Girl Party

Pink and black is the new orange and black! This year, we put together a unique take on your typical Halloween party theme – we combined scary and pretty. And boy girl, is it ever memorable.

BPFK Halloween Pink HousesWe started by creating a centerpiece for our table from a row of pretty Pink Haunted Houses made with our eco-friendly, recycling craft stickers. All you need are three empty milk cartons and our Pink House stickers to begin building your party table. We repurposed shimmery fabric to give the illusion of a foggy night. We purchased wooden black trees to create a creepy, yet idyllic tree-lined street. From our central theme, we pulled together other elements to make this an unforgettable Halloween.BPFK Halloween Party Place SettingEach guest is greeted with a personalized place setting. BPFK Pumpkin SandwichesWe made pumpkin-shaped PBJ sandwiches with celery tops. I bet even my little one would be open to trying celery now.

Halloween Pink Houses CakeIt wouldn’t be a celebration without a yummy cake. We picked up this beauty at Tammie Coe Cakes – a bakery up the street from our house.

BPFK Halloween CarrotsWe served up healthy orange snacks. (Sorry, no Cheetos at this party.)

BPFK Mummies Utensil HoldersAs always, at Box Play for Kids, we like to repurpose recyclables whenever possible. These adorable mummy napkin rings can be made with empty toilet paper rolls, wiggly eyes, some gauze and a dab of glue.

BPFK Pink Spider StrawsWe found pink and white polka dot paper straws and embellished them with miniature spiders. We also found a pretty pink and silver ribbon to trim the tops of the black paper cups. It’s all in the details!

Safari Party: Time to Get WILD!!!

If you have little ones you will undoubtedly be planning a themed birthday party in the near future (and probably for years to come). Tempting as it may be to swing by the party store and pick up an all-in-one princess party pack, ditching the cheesy plastic tablecloth to create your own theme doesn’t have to be intimidating. With just some recycled cardboard, a handful of Box Play for Kids stickers, and some cute kick-knacks we threw together our very own African Safari Party. So take a walk on the wild side and don’t be afraid to plan your own adventure!

BPFK Giraffe Jeep Outside_Final

We skipped the balloon on the mailbox and opted for a more unique theme teaser for the outside. I came across this handmade, hand painted, wooden jeep and couldn’t resist. And what’s a safari without animals? Paper towel rolls and our very own giraffe stickers add some wildlife to the party.

BPFK Safari Wide Hero_2

Throw together a map, a lantern, binoculars, a few more giraffe stickers and voilà – an air-conditioned African safari. If you haven’t noticed, toilet paper rolls make fantastic binoculars. Our camo stickers and some rubber bands are a great way to transform trash into interactive party favors.

Let your little explorers make their own binoculars as a party activity. Less prep work for you…more fun for them.

Send the kiddos on a sightseeing adventure around the around the house (while the parents relax). Chloe has the right idea hiding under the burlap table skirt we made. Very serious safari fun.

napkin rings with forkSmall party details can go a long way. We repurposed paper towel rolls using animal print duct tape to create DIY napkin rings. So simple and wildly cute!

cake cutting 1

Instead of grabbing a pre-made cake off the shelf, you can easily and inexpensively create a beautiful custom cake with an edible image. We found this antique compass image to go along with our safari theme. It was painful to make the first cut because the cake was so gorgeous.

elephants on cake camo 2Not even the elephants could resist this yummy cake! Kids will be kids. Fortunately these little creatures were clean! Round wicker floor pillows made for perfect kid seats and created the atmosphere of being on a safari.

The safari party doesn’t have to stop at your house. Send each little explorer home with his or her own BPFK binoculars and some new animal friends – perfect party favors. After this party, mama is planning a real safari adventure for 2015!
