Not only are we at the peak of summer (a.k.a. ice cream season!), we’re right in the middle of National Ice Cream Month! So what better way to celebrate than with the zippiest, yummiest, homemade ice cream recipe that is sure to make you the coolest mom on the block?!
Last year we suggested some yummy toppings for an ice cream social, but this year, we’re stepping up our game and showing you our favorite way to make your very OWN ice cream–from scratch–with some basic ingredients you probably have around the kitchen. No bulky machine or electricity needed.
Whether you’re throwing a birthday party at home or hosting a slumber party, this summer activity is sure to be a hit with kids and adults alike. Oh, and to top off the ice cream theme…don’t forget to save your empty milk cartons and grab a party pack of our Box Play for Kids ice cream truck stickers.
What you’ll need: Gallon-size ziplock, quart-size ziplock, ice cubes (enough to fill each gallon-size bag about half full), sugar (2 tablespoons per serving), course salt (1/2 cup for each gallon-size bag), vanilla extract (1/2 teaspoon per serving), milk (1 cup per serving), your favorite toppings and mix-ins.
Step 1: Fill the gallon-size ziplock with ice and salt. Fill the smaller ziplock with milk, sugar, and vanilla extract. Seal the small bag tightly and place inside the bag of ice. Seal the larger bag, hand over to your kiddos, and let them go to town shaking everything up. Check the texture of the inside bag after 5-10 mins. Ice cream should be firm.
Step 2: Add your favorite mix-ins to the ice cream bag. We added some fresh cherries (minus the pits) and white chocolate chips. Put the smaller bag inside the larger bag again and be sure both bags are sealed tightly. Give the kids one last chance to shake up everything up.
Of course, no Box Play for Kids ice cream-making party is complete without our ice cream truck sticker. Save your empty milk cartons, grab a sticker pack and you’ve got the perfect, eco-friendly, ice cream social centerpiece or party favor.
