Bashas’ DIY Egg Carton Spring Garden

Spring into action with the kiddos! Creating a garden is a simple family activity that is sure to please all. And, have yummy results!

Supplies needed: Bashas’ egg carton, a dozen eggshells, seeds, small spoon, pushpin, potting soil and water.

BPFK_Bashas_DIY_Garden_Supplies

Step 1: Empty eggshells. Use knife to gently crack along the tops of each egg. Thoroughly wash out each eggshell and dry. (We made delicious scrambled eggs.)

Step 2: Poke holes on the bottoms of each eggshell for better drainage. (hint: it may be easier doing this step while the egg is still whole – less fragile than empty shells.)

Step 3: Place seeds in separate containers.

Step 4: Using a small spoon, fill eggshell halfway with potting soil.

Step 6: Cover seeds with more potting soil and place in egg carton.

Step 7: Repeat 11 times.

Step 8: Create labels for each variety of seeds. We chose to use bamboo skewers left over from a party.

Step 9: Add water to each eggshell. We used about 3-4 spoonfuls to moisten the soil.

Done! Place egg carton on a windowsill or outside so it gets plenty of sunlight. Be sure to water regularly (Keep moist but do not over water). Depending on variety, seedlings should start to sprout in 7-10 days.

Box Play for Kids Nordstom Event

Today was Super Saturday at Nordstrom Scottsdale Fashion Square and we were thrilled to be invited to craft with the kids. We repurposed empty toilet paper rolls into Sharks, Octopuses and Footballs with our ecofriendly recycling craft stickers. They make the perfect stocking stuffers and are light-weight, battery-free, noise-free travel toys – a creative and inexpensive way to engage and occupy the kids during the holidays! Now that’s JOY!Box Play Nordstrom Event 2013Seven Box Play for Kids sticker styles available at select Nordstrom stores.

Favorite Books for October

Our kiddo is learning to read and it’s pretty exciting. I still have to read these books to her but she is definitely picking up words fast!

Box Play for Kids October Books_4

Bunny Eats Lunch
I specifically purchased this book because we are having “eating lunch issues”. Our 4-year old would rather spend the 20-30 minutes for lunch talking rather than eating. The adorable bunny eats a yummy array of veggies – carrots, celery sticks and potatoes. The large animated typography is fun to read.

Chloe
A couple of weeks ago our Chloe went to her BFF’s 5th birthday party. She went to the store with her dad to buy Maggie a gift and instantly recognized her name and insisted on buying it. One for Maggie. One for Chloe. It’s a sweet story of Chloe and her ten older brothers and sisters and ten younger brothers and sisters. It’s all about the importance of quality family fun time.

I Want My Hat Back
A bear has lost his hat. What if he never sees it again? This book has beautiful illustrations I DROOL over. I recommend reading each of the animal voices differently out loud and as silly as possible. The kids will love it.

Llama Llama Time To Share
Great rhyming book with obviously a good lesson.

Happy reading!

Saddle Up! It’s Time for a Kickin’ Cowboy Party.

Howdy! Our little friend Dominic is turning 4 and we’ve put together ideas for his cowboy themed birthday party.

We always like to create a focal point for our table design and build out. Our overall color palette for the party is blue and red. We used three of our Red Barn stickers that repurpose cereal boxes. We made horse cupcake toppers and placed them in the foreground to create a corral. I’m madly in love with this Mexican blanket on the diagonally – so vibrant and festive!

Each guest receives this customized party favor – cowboy hat, our Cow sticker wrapped in a blue bandana and a sheriff star. Yeehaw!

BPFK Cowboy Party Favors

We always like to have at least one simple DIY craft activity for the kids and parents. This time, we made cowboy mustaches using popsicle sticks and black construction paper.

We made cowboy beans and corn on the cob for some yummy grub.

The kids went wild for these cupcakes.

We recycled an Amazon box into horseshoes by cutting out the shapes and covering them with shiny silver duct tape – kid-friendly, light-weight and 100% fun!

Ghoulish Girly-Girl Party

Pink and black is the new orange and black! This year, we put together a unique take on your typical Halloween party theme – we combined scary and pretty. And boy girl, is it ever memorable.

BPFK Halloween Pink HousesWe started by creating a centerpiece for our table from a row of pretty Pink Haunted Houses made with our eco-friendly, recycling craft stickers. All you need are three empty milk cartons and our Pink House stickers to begin building your party table. We repurposed shimmery fabric to give the illusion of a foggy night. We purchased wooden black trees to create a creepy, yet idyllic tree-lined street. From our central theme, we pulled together other elements to make this an unforgettable Halloween.BPFK Halloween Party Place SettingEach guest is greeted with a personalized place setting. BPFK Pumpkin SandwichesWe made pumpkin-shaped PBJ sandwiches with celery tops. I bet even my little one would be open to trying celery now.

Halloween Pink Houses CakeIt wouldn’t be a celebration without a yummy cake. We picked up this beauty at Tammie Coe Cakes – a bakery up the street from our house.

BPFK Halloween CarrotsWe served up healthy orange snacks. (Sorry, no Cheetos at this party.)

BPFK Mummies Utensil HoldersAs always, at Box Play for Kids, we like to repurpose recyclables whenever possible. These adorable mummy napkin rings can be made with empty toilet paper rolls, wiggly eyes, some gauze and a dab of glue.

BPFK Pink Spider StrawsWe found pink and white polka dot paper straws and embellished them with miniature spiders. We also found a pretty pink and silver ribbon to trim the tops of the black paper cups. It’s all in the details!

Memorial Day Project: American Flag

My kids love painting, I love anything that has their hand or foot prints on it {other than my floors and windows} and it’s Memorial Day weekend. Add these together and here’s one USA-themed project that’s simple to do with your kids.

I painted their hands and feet and they did the rest. One bruised tailbone later {painted feet on a concrete patio is a slipping hazard, by the way} and we have our flag.
Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone!
